Skywhale encounter

.

I’ve decided to declare that I love the Skywhale.  As a Canberra local, I think there has to be an entry on my blog about this glorious creation. She is testing her wings and Canberra’s sensibilities.

Skywhale 7My first response to the photos on the internet were a bit harsh … but, just as many have found, it is impossible to stay mad at her.

It’s the gentle curve of her smile.

Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of ‘what if’, which is the theme that underpins the work of the sculptor, Patricia Piccinini.  There are so many uncomfortable things in life.  We have a choice; get comfortable with being uncomfortable or lock ourselves away.  But reducing our experiences down to a confirmed handful of safety-assured connections to the outside world is a dangerous road to emotional starvation.

In contrast, the Skywhale takes to the sky as a reminder that we don’t have to settle for conventional or average.

When was the last time you asked yourself ‘what if’?

  1. OMG. It pushes my boundaries. I was going to ask why it’s called a skywhale, but then I thought about it. To be in the sky, it needs wings, but somehting is askew. One imagines baby skywhales hanging from the teats. I don’t think I like it. :-/

    • There was much controversy when she first launched. Some loved her. Some did not. I loved the idea that it was a sculpture, something artistic, rather than just a cartoon character like a pirate or a soccer ball. She does look a little silly when the sky is full of normal balloons. But she’s a great sight when she has the sky to herself.
